Boston Marathon’s 1st Female Entrant Recalls Historic Run

You can listen here, this story

Kathrine Switzer (born January 5, 1947) is the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as a numbered entry. She entered and completed the race in 1967, five years before women were officially allowed to compete in it. Her finishing time of approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes was nearly an hour behind the first female finisher, Bobbi Gibb. She registered under the gender-neutral "K. V. Switzer". It was not done in an attempt to mislead the officials; she had long used "K. V. Switzer" to sign the articles she wrote for her college paper. Race official Jock Semple attempted to remove her from the race, and is noted to have shouted, "Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers." However, Switzer's boyfriend, who was running with her, shoved Semple aside and sent him flying. The photographs taken of the incident made world headlines.
As a result of her run, the AAU barred women from all competition with male runners, on pain of losing the right to compete.
Switzer won the 1974 New York City Marathon, with a time of 3:07:29. Her personal best time for the marathon distance is 2:51:37, at Boston in 1975.
She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2011.

How to Choose A Running Shoe

How to choose running shoes In determining how to choose a running shoe, your choice of running shoes can make the difference between having a good or bad experience, running in comfort or pain, and, most importantly, whether you stay healthy or get injured.
The biggest and most common mistake I see novice runners make, (and yes, I made the same mistake), is to bargain shop for an inexpensive first pair of running shoes right off the shoe store clearance table, or worse, off the rack at a department store. After all, who wants to pay a lot for shoes when you may not actually use them much? How do you justify a higher priced running shoe to your spouse? Aren't you just paying a lot for a logo on the side?
All these observations make sense. But this kind of thinking will likely lead you to the equally logical decision to quit after a couple of miserable runs. The very tenacious among us may wait until they suffer a blown-out knee or serious shin, hip or foot problem. Forget bargains. What you need to start running is the right shoe, not the cheapest.

Choosing a running shoe can be an overwhelming task given all the high-tech shoes available today and all the

DOMS (Agujetas, Maniotas)

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) describes a muscular pain or muscular soreness that occurs 24 to 48 hours after intense exercise. This muscular soreness is most frequently felt when you begin a new exercise program, change your exercise routine or  increase the intensity of your exercise routine.

Causes of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

Delayed onset muscle soreness may be the result of muscle tissue breakdown. The amount of tearing (and soreness) depends on how hard and for how long you exercise and what type of exercise you do. DOMS is often precipitated predominantly by eccentric exercise, such as downhill running, plyometrics, and resistance training. Lactic acid and its accumulation was once thought to be a major cause of DOMS, however, this is not the case. Blood lactate returns to resting levels within one hour of exercise, even after extremely intense bouts of work.

What is the treatment for muscle soreness after exercise?

Nothing is proven to be 100 percent effective and, although some people have found the following advice helpful, it's best to try a few things and see what works for you.
The best advice for treating DOMS is to prevent it in the first place. There is no one simple way to treat delayed onset muscle soreness. In fact, there has been an ongoing debate about both the cause and treatment of DOMS.
Warm-up has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of DOMS. Using warm up to increase muscle temperature is thought to improve muscle function by leading greater muscle elasticity, an increased resistance of muscle tissue to tearing, more relaxed muscles, an increased extensibility of connective tissues within muscle, and decreased muscle viscosity. This, in turn, allows for more efficient muscle contractions, which increases the speed and force.
